Waldorf students and Forest City residents alike will soon be able to enjoy the well-known musical, Mamma Mia as the Waldorf Theatre Department conducted auditions last Sunday, Feb. 10.
“The auditions went well,” said Dr. Marla Britton Johnson, Assistant Professor of theatre at Waldorf University and director of the musical. “[There’s] lots of good talent to choose from.”
“We have 13 roles and seven ensemble parts. This is a larger show compared to others,” said Dr. Johnson.
Waldorf Theater has announced the results of the audition. Alexis Washington will be taking on the role of Donna Sheridan, the musical’s lead.
Washington is a senior theatre performance major at Waldorf University.
“I am so excited,” said Washington. “I will get to be silly, sassy and show another side of myself as a performer.”
According to Dr. Johnson, this is the first time Waldorf Theater is going to perform this romantic comedy. This will also be the first musical to show at the Boman Fine Arts Center, opened in Oct. 2018.
“It’s a fun and upbeat show that the community and university will enjoy,” said Dr. Johnson. “The story is cute, and the songs are catchy and well known (by ABBA). Musicals are a lot of work but rewarding.”
Prior to the show, Washington and the other cast members will not only be rehearsing and performing—they will each be assisting in a different aspect behind the scenes. Washington will be apart of the design team.
“As a department, we work together to make sure that lights, costumes and all the other aspects of the show [are on point],” said Washington.
Mamma Mia will be at the Boman Fine Arts Center from April 10 through 13.
